(PRC“A common thing that happens when mechanical engineering salaries are being negotiated is that the engineer may sell him or herself short”, says Tony Buel, owner and manager of Mechanical-EngineeringSalary.com.  “Discovering what one is worth before going into salary negotiations will typically lead to a higher salary at the end of the day”.

Some basic research is not to be underestimated in its effectiveness for commanding a higher salary.  There are a few basic tips that should be kept in mind not just for an engineering salary but for just about any profession.

Tony Buel lists the following tips to establish a firm hold on the salary one is attempting to achieve.

1 – Spend time determining what a particular job’s skill sets are worth by researching salary surveys for that occupation. Experience and location are also factors to be considered.

2 – As a candidate, know those skills, experiences, accomplishments and talents that fit the job description.  Be prepared to convey them during the interview process.

3 – Sidestep salary numbers at the beginning until it is known if the company is interested.  At that point the candidate has additional leverage in pinpointing a competitive salary.

4 – Show eagerness and enthusiasm for a particular position, but be willing to walk away if the terms are unsatisfactory.

5 – Consider trading some of the extra benefits and perks for higher pay.

Also, being prepared and maintaining sharp skills and knowledge in the particular field are particularly effective.  Maintaining that edge over other candidates will improve the chances of getting the desired mechanical engineer salary.
