Over 70 Students graded in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in just one day at Icon mma , with 8 students from Norwich all passing to become the highest ranking students in Norfolk, U.K.
In December 2012, 70 plus students graded in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, eight students of the Icon Mixed Martial Arts team Norwich faring excellently in their art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Slough . All of them successfully passed their tests, graduating to higher levels, from blue to second-degree black belt, making the Icon Norwich team the highest ranking team in Norfolk.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an MMA form that is fast gaining popularity as an effective self-defense system with its focus on defending against stronger opponents by using leverage and techniques like choke-holds and joint blocks. Its primary difference from the parent art of Judo is that it is not just an MMA but a sport and a whole unique way of life.
Members awarded grades were-
1. Steve Cowan – second degree black belt.
2. Tom Jermy – brown belt.
3. Daddy Kabuiku – purple belt.
4. Mike Peachey – purple belt.
5. Simon duckworth – blue belt.
6. Tyler Bloomfield – blue belt.
7. Luke Platten- blue belt.
8. Simon Birritteri – blue belt.
Icon MMA Norwich was started in 2003. At that point in time, it had 5 students. Now, almost a decade later, its roster includes an impressive 100 members. It has emerged as a true school of champions, and has trained students from the very basics, to competing at the European level and emerging as European Champions. Starting in the back room of a local gym, now the Norwich based team offer an impressive 3000 sq/ft modern training facility.
